BUSHIDO: The "Way of the Warrior" was first
expounded by the Japanese Confucian scholar,
YAMAGE SOKO (1622-1685). This code
of behavior for all warriors grew out of the
unwritten medieval "Way of the bow and the
horse." The bushi or SAMURAI were expected
to be exemplary, loyal fighters possessing
seven virtues that have been listed by Nitobe
Inazo (1862-1933) in his book,
"Bushido," published in 1905. These virtues
were: justice and honesty, courage and
disgust for death, sympathy, politeness and
respect, sincerity, loyalty to leaders, and duty
to one's name and clan. The primary aim of
Bushido was to make a class of civil
warriors who could best serve society and
their families.
